An estimated 29 percent of Americans suffer from hypertension, or high blood pressure, but are unaware they have it. More than 40 percent of Americans who suffer from high blood pressure are not treated for it.
That’s a serious problem, because hypertension is a major risk factor for stroke, heart failure, coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease and kidney disease.
Hypertension Clinic services
The staff of St. Anthony’s Hypertension Clinic works with patients to compile a comprehensive medical and blood pressure history, and identify barriers to treatment preventing achievement of goal pressures. The patient receives a drug and lifestyle regimen and receives close follow-up care to monitor blood pressure.
If problems remain, doctors and staff will test for secondary causes, such as sleep apnea or blood flow obstruction to the kidneys. About 15 percent of people with hypertension fall under the category of ‘resistant hypertension,’ which means they’re on at least three medicines and their blood pressure still is not under control.
Hypertension Clinic diagnostic tools include the following:
- a special cuff that can be worn 24 hours a day and will record blood pressure continuously
- renal Doppler ultrasound for identification of renal artery stenosis
- access to trials offering the latest in hypertension treatment
- screening for sleep apnea
